What to consider before buying water heaters?
The main consideration will be whether to opt for a vented on unvented water heater.
A vented water heater includes a cold water storage tank which supplies water to the hot water cylinder via a vent pipe. Because this system relies on gravity, it can operate at a lower pressure. The main advantage of this system is that should the main supply of water or gas be cut off you still have access to a limited hot water supply.
Unvented water heaters, however, are connected to the main supply of water. Because of this, they don't require a cold water tank – and as such take up less space. Because unvented water heaters are connected directly to the mains, the water pressure is better too. The main advantage of this system is that it improves the performance of your bath and shower. The lack of a separate tank of water helps avoid issues such as freezing during winter or contamination.
